Oboe Repairman Brian Seaton
Once again, it gives me great pleasure to announce that noted repairman Brian Seaton of North American Oboe House (www.oboehouse.com) will be coming to Norfolk during January 10 - 12, 2010 to do instrument repairs. This valued service is provided to the Hampton Roads area to help ease the challenges of finding a reputable service by bringing Brian directly to our community. As usual, he will be working out of my home; I am setting up his appointments at this time. I would like to get a good idea of the number of folks needing his services by Jan 1! I will take appointments after that, however, setting up an appointment earlier guarantees the services. (Yes, we need a minimum in order for everyone to enjoy this benefit.) Brian services instruments at the rate of $85 per hour; payments are due when services are rendered. If you have a school instrument, please work out the details with the institution in advance for immediate payment of services.
Repairs are done either by appointment or drop off. Please indicate which you prefer. Clients are always welcome to observe while Brian does repairs or enjoy Colley Ave. or Starbucks just around the corner while waiting for services to be completed. If you desire an appointment either call or email. Please provide several options of times that you are available for a quicker response. Always provide your phone number, preferably cell, when scheduling services. Also provide what brand of instrument you have. Most folks need general repairs and adjustments, but please specify instrument problems or special repairs needed. For adding High D Facilitator keys I would need to know sooner so that the key can be ordered and delivered. If you drop off your instrument then please arrange in advance a picked up time. Instruments may be dropped off at any time from 8 AM until 9 PM. Please provide a note inside the case with:
--- your name,
--- contact information, cell phone numbers are best,
--- make/model/serial number of your oboe,
--- as well as any specific repairs that need to be done.
NOTE: Please make certain your instrument insurance is up to date. While there has never been an issue with someone leaving their instrument here, owners claim full responsibility on instruments left here. I value being able to offer the oboe community this quality service as well as build a more connected community. With the lack of a qualified repairman here in Hampton Roads Brian has been providing his services here for the past 5 years with two visits here a year, during the winter and summer months. If there is someone you think who might be interested in this service or to be put on this mailing list for other oboe events in the community please forward this along and have them contact me for future mailings. This year, William & Mary’s student-led Sinfonicron Light Opera Company returns with Misters Gilbert and Sullivan and their upbeat light opera The Gondoliers! It's a story about forbidden love and clandestine marriage, about dreams and making them come true. Casilda, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, has come to Venice seeking the knowledge of the Lord High Inquisitor Don Alhambra. His Inquisitiveness reveals that she was wed in infancy to the child-prince of Barataria, and that he is now one of two young Gondoliers. Unfortunately, only a lowly nursery maid, the mother of the Duke's private drummer Luiz, knows which man is which. Taking matters into his own hands, Alhambra goes to appoint both Gondoliers as King. Join Marco, Giuseppe, Tessa, Gianetta, and the rest of the Gondoliers and Contadine as they are transported from the beautiful city of Venice to the fantastical shores of Barataria!

Lady Composers….music for horn and piano
A concert of music you’ve never heard by composers you don’t know? Lady Composers….music for horn and piano is an exciting, eye and ear-opening, thoroughly enjoyable program of works through the ages written for horn and piano by women composers. On this program is music for horn including the jazzy Foxtrot by Maria Grenfell, Sonata for Horn and Piano by Edith Borroff, the evocative Songs of the Wolf by Andrea Clearfield, sultry Summer by Becky Archibald, Episode I by African American composer, Zenobia Powell Perry and the Impressionistic and moody Twilight by Elsa Barraine.
A special feature of the concert is the premiere of a newly commissioned work for unaccompanied horn by British composer, Liz Lane, based on a Gregorian chant and poetry of medieval composer Hildegard of Bingen. The work, titled Linear Lines, was selected from nearly one hundred inquiries and submissions. It mysteriously and subtly links the work of the medieval female artist with the creativity of a 21st century composer.
Works for piano include Moderato from Sonatina in A by Marianne von Martinez and Hexentanz by Clara Schumann.
The soloists, Marlene Ford, horn and Jeanette Winsor, piano, make the music more meaningful by presenting spoken program notes. The program notes will include the sharing of recent correspondences by living composers. “Lady” was used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to designate all female performing groups: Lady Orchestras, Lady Bands, etc.
These concerts are presented in conjunction with Minds Wide Open, a project of the Virginia Commission for the Arts that highlights women in the arts.
All performances are free and open to the public:

Virginia Opera: Don Giovanni
February, famous for Valentine’s Day, now has the passion and dark humor of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. This 17th century twisted tale of seduction and deceit depicts a story of Mozart’s “Don Juan.” A combination of comedy and drama, Don Giovanni takes place in Seville, Spain while sung in Italian, with English supertitles.
Don Giovanni urges you to pursue the ones you love ultimately bringing you to the depths of hell through his conquests and ultimate downfall.
Universally acclaimed singing actress, soprano Cristina Nassif returns to sing the role of tormented Donna Elvira. Soprano Nicolle Foland making her Virginia Opera debut as Donna Anna. Baritone Matthew Worth makes his Virginia Opera debut as the seductive title character living through his libido only to find retribution through the dissention into the flames of hell.
Another returning favorite is Lillian Groag who is bringing her directorial expertise and passion to Don Giovanni. Associate Artistic Director and Associate Conductor Joseph Walsh will conduct. Virginia Opera’s production of Don Giovanni is entirely new with the scenic design by Erhard Rom, lighting designed by Mark McCullough and fight choreographer Gregg C. Lloyd. The set was built by Virginia Opera’s production team of Dave Young and Jason Tuthill during the summer of 2009 in Norfolk, Va.

Williamsburg Symphonia League Seeks President The Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Symphonia League is currently inviting applications and nominations for the office of presidency of the League. Ingrid Brown, the current president, who has served the League with distinction for many years, has elected to take leave of her official duties at the end of this fiscal year, May 31, 2010.
The League is a volunteer organization whose members support, assist and promote the growth of the Williamsburg Symphonia. Founded as a community orchestra to present educational programs for children, the Symphonia is now Williamsburg, Virginia’s own professional orchestra. The Symphonia continues to thrill audiences with sold-out concerts and inspires young people with its music education programs in local schools.
The Williamsburg Symphonia League is uniquely positioned to assure the continued success and growth of the Symphonia and is filled with opportunities for musical enrichment, meeting new friends, connecting with old friends, and participating in a variety of exciting fund raising and social activities. The League President is a recognized leadership position within the Williamsburg community. The President chairs the Board of Directors, presides at all meetings of the League, and maintains general supervision of its interests and activities. The President sets the tone for the League and will often be its public face.
In its search for a President, the Board seeks a leader who is willing to dedicate sufficient time to support the requirements of the position; possesses the organizational, creative and administrative skills required in order to assure that the League accomplishes its mission; is experienced in fund raising activities in organizations comparable in size to the League; and as the League’s principal spokesperson, possesses effective communication skills, diplomacy and the ability to interact with other community organizations in collaborative efforts.
Any questions, applications and/or nominations should be submitted to Mr. Paul Tongue, Chairman of the League’s Nominating Committee via e-mail to pgtongue@verizon.net.
