Virginia Chorale: Sing in the
Seasons: Five Centuries of Songs for the Four Seasons
From beloved Renaissance madrigals
celebrating Spring to American standards like "Autumn Leaves"
our opening program is devoted to music inspired by the seasons
of the year. Romantic folksongs of Brahms, part-songs of Elgar
and Debussy's cycle of minature masterpieces, "The Three Songs
of Charles d'Orleans" round out this festive program kicking
off our 26th season with style, wit and flair! In addition to the "familiar" madrigals, standards & folksongs, I'm particularly excited about the Shakespeare settings we're offering. A setting of Sonnet LXIV by Dominick Argento (a 9/11 elegy), a Witches' Chorus by the young Finnish composer, Jaakko Mäntyjärvvi, and several settings of the New York City composer, Matthew Harris, will be (local) premieres. Check out our “meet the music” chats 30 minutes before every concert. Read program notes online:

Gilbert and Sullivan
Revisited
Virginia Choral Society presents Gilbert and Sullivan Revisited. Gilbert and Sullivan refers to the
Victorian era partnership of librettist W. S. Gilbert
(1836–1911) and composer Arthur Sullivan
(1842–1900). Together, they wrote fourteen comic operas
between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of
Penzance, and The Mikado are among the best known. Gilbert, who
wrote the words, created fanciful "topsy-turvy" worlds for
these operas, where each absurdity is taken to its logical
conclusion—fairies rub elbows with British lords,
flirting is a capital offence, gondoliers ascend to the
monarchy, and pirates turn out to be noblemen who have gone
wrong. Sullivan, six years Gilbert's junior, composed the
music, contributing memorable melodies that could convey both
humor and pathos. Music Performance includes selections from:
"The Pirates of Penzance", "H. M. S. Pinafore", "The Mikado",
"The Gondoliers." Advance tickets: $15 General, $12

Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia kicks off its 2009-2010 concert season. Having just returned from a the Haydn 200th Commemoration in Vienna, Austria, Music Director Helen Martell and Concert Orchestra conductor Todd Parrish explore landmark American music and some European masterpieces that have influenced American classical music. The Concert Orchestra begins the evening with music by Mozart and Bizet. Two European composers who have advanced classical music, Mozart, through his inventiveness and genius and Bizet, by incorporating regional flavor in his music through the use of folk songs. The final work on the first half is Gershwin’s An American in Paris Suite. This collection of music from the film of the same name has Gershwin combining American jazz, classical music and car horns into a classic piece of American music. The Bay Youth Symphony Orchestra offers the complete Symphony No. 9 by Anton Dvorák for the second half. Known as the New World Symphony, this work was composed in New York City in 1893. Dvorák was the pre-eminent living composer and was brought to New York to found the National Conservatory of Music. He was strongly influenced by Native American and African-American music. Although not based on any particular song, Dvorák incorporated elements of American music into this Symphony.

Sunday, November 29, 2009, 3 pm Eastern Virginia Brass:
Star Spangled Brass
Join the Eastern Virginia Brass for Star Spangled Brass, a celebration of America’s great music.
The Eastern Virginia Brass quintet, a Virginia favorite among music lovers, is known for its lively performances and easy rapport with audiences. Each work performed is rousing and important in the history of this country’s music. The earliest of the works dates to the stately works of the American Revolution, a collection of melodies from Bicentennial Brass Music and continues with works of the of the Civil War, such as a medley of poignant tunes from the American Brass Band Journal. The program continues with American favorites through the 21st century—A Trumpeter’s Lullaby, Armed Forces Salute, Simple Gifts, Shenandoah, St. Louis Blues and East St. Louis Toodle-oo.
Of course, no Star Spangled Brass concert is complete without Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever—and five brass players doing the job of 50!
The Eastern Virginia Brass quintet (Robert Spaeth, trumpet; Marlene Ford, horn; Lawrence Clemens, trumpet; Peter DuBeau, tuba; Robert Ford, trombone) makes this program exciting for the entire family. Virginia Chorale: Sweet was the
Song: Choral Classics for the Holidays
Sing in the Holidays with the Virginia
Chorale's most popular program! We continue our Britten Project
with his earliest Christmas cantata, a series of carol settings
entitled "Christ's Nativity". The central movement, "Sweet was
the song the Virgin sang" sould inspire his beloved "Ceremony
of Carols". We also continue our collaboration with last
season's 25th anniversary commission composer, Robert Convery,
in a performance and recording of his beautiful cantata, "The
Nativity of our Lord". Along with popular songs and carols, we
honor Mendelssohn's bicentennial with festive anthems of the
season. Tickets: $35/$27; Student: $10.Visit www.vachorale.org for more

Lieder Abend and Robert Brown Tribute Concert The students of the Vocal Music Department of The Governor's School for the Arts will pay musical homage to their beloved Choral Director, teacher and mentor, Robert Brown, who passed away during the summer. Brown was with the department as Choral Director, Principal Accompanist and teacher since January 1994. The way of cultivating "his" choral sound was akin to the "Shaw" choral sound, or the "Ormandy" Philadelphia Orchestra sound...unique, and once heard, always remembered. Brown's larger than life personality, and his genuine caring for his students and his music is something to remember and to cherish, and his presence is sorely missed this year by everyone. For these memorial concerts, the students will sing the Faure Requiem, under the direction of Michael Regan. The Requiem will be performed with Oksana Lutsyshyn as accompanist on the Saturday concert, and for the Sunday concert, members of the Virginia Symphony will perform the fully orchestrated version. In the first half of each concert, as a Liederabend, the students will perform vocal duets by Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Purcell, and Rossini, accompanied by Oksana Lutsyshyn, as well as the choral version of Schubert's Standchen.
Tickets are $10, general admission, and may be purchased at the door an hour before each concert. A scholarship fund in Robert Brown's name has been created and any donations, large or small will be greatfully accepted. Checks can be made out to The Governor's School for the Arts Foundation, and designated for ROBERT BROWN SCHOLARSHIP You may bring your check to the concert or you can mail it to the school:
