The Virginia Children's Chorus
Come sing with us! The Virginia Children's Chorus will hold auditions for new students for our spring 2008 season on Saturday, January 5, Monday January 7 and Tuesday, January 8, 2008. Auditions will be at Talbot Park Baptist Church, 6919 Granby St., Norfolk. Auditions must be scheduled in advance by calling our Chorus Manager at 440-9100. Beginners are welcome! Boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, receive excellent voice training and perform in concert while making new friends and having fun. Tidewater Community College Choral Ensemble
Are you looking for a choral group to belong to? Good news! The Tidewater Community College Choral Ensemble is looking for singers in all voice parts. We are a "come as you are" small choral ensemble with no audition requirement or other prerequisite, although some prior choral experience is helpful. Our repertoire is eclectic, including everything from motets to madrigals, sacred to secular, renaissance to modern, old masters to vocal jazz. Community singers are welcome. Registration is open now through January 7 when class begins. We meet on the Portsmouth campus of TCC Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. If you would like to join us, contact the counseling center at any TCC campus and register for MUS 137 - Chorus, a one credit hour class. Annual Opera Gala An Evening at the Winter Palace
Virginia Opera's annual fundraising gala, celebrates with a modern twist the opulence and splendor of Imperial Russia just two weeks before the curtain lifts for the company's first Russian opera, Tchaikovsky's masterful Eugene Onegin. In addition to dinner and live performances by Virginia Opera artists, guests will be able to dance to the late 20th century tunes of Off the Record and enjoy the sampling of traditional Russian libations. An online auction is open to the public at http://virginiaopera.cmarket.com until Jan. 24, 2008 in advance of the gala, which this season not only includes a silent auction as part of the evening's festivities, but also a live auction that will feature special items. All auction proceeds benefit Virginia Opera and help support the company's ability to produce high-quality operas, as well as the extensive education and outreach programs that touched the lives of more than 250,000 students and community members throughout the Commonwealth over the past year. Serving as emcee for An Evening at the Winter Palace is Norfolk's own Hope Mihalap, the national award-winning humorist with an ear for accents (she speaks fluent Greek, French and Italian), a love of opera, and a wealth of lively experiences to share - including her time working as private secretary to Sir Rudolf Bing, former head of the Metropolitan Opera. Schola Cantorum: Truth from Above
The program is inspired by the Veronese painting, The Virgin and Child with Angels appearing to Saints Antony Abbot and Paul, which is currently being restored at the Chrysler Mueseum. The program includes beautiful music - secular and sacred, from various historical periods - inspired by the story of the Mother and Child of the Season. Governor's School: A Winter Celebration of the Arts
The Governor's School for the Arts Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and Visual Arts Departments present " A Winter Celebration of the Arts. " The Opening Reception for the Visual Art Exhibition will be held in the main lobby from 5:30 P.M .- 7:30 P.M. and is free and open to the public. A concert of symphonic, jazz, and operatic music will be performed at 7:30 P.M. by the Instrumental and Vocal Music Departments. Music by African American Composers

The Hampton University Department of Music and the Hampton University Choirs present the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Concert: Music by African American Composers. This year's concert will feature music by African - American composers and arrangers as performed by the Hampton University Concert Choir, faculty, and community guests. Soprano, Lorraine McFadden Bell will perform the epic work For My People by Oakwood College professor and composer, Dr. Eurydice Ostermann with narration provided by Rev. Dr. Timothy T. Boddie, Chaplain of Hampton University. Guest Choirs include Woodside High School Meistersingers from Newport News under the direction of Jason Dungee and the St. Augustine's College Concert Choir under the baton of Maestro Eric Poole. The Song Continues…2008

Celebrate the arts with the family! Adrian Lucas, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Worcester Cathedral, will be visiting Hampton Roads under the auspices of the Arts Council of England. Chorus Auditions for Verdi's opera Aida
It's time to prepare for the 2008 TodiMusicFest! Chorus Auditions for Verdi's opera Aida are scheduled for Saturday, March 8 at Baylake United Methodist Church (4300 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach), beginning at Noon. Please prepare a vocal solo that complements your voice -- preferably in a foreign language (The opera will be sung in Italian). An accompanist will be provided. Diehn Concert: The Tallis Scholars
In existence for over 30 years, The Tallis Scholars are without rival in the glorious sound world of Renaissance polyphony. Their beautifully blended choral sound calls to mind the magnificent stained glass windows of the mighty cathedrals of Europe. Under the tireless and inspirational direction of the Oxford-educated scholar, Peter Phillips, the Tallis Scholars are among the busiest ensembles in the world, with over 50 award-winning recordings on the Gimmel label, and regular tours throughout Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Their annual concerts consistently receive rave reviews and draw capacity crowds. They have performed for members of the English Royal Family and for the Pope at a special concert at the Vatican. Diehn Concert, CREO collaboration: The Synergy of Dance, Visual Arts and Music. The performance is a collaborative project of CREO, Old Dominion University Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Second Wind Dance Company under the direction of Beverly Cordoba Duane and ODU sculptor Peter Eudenbach. Diehn Concert, Bart van Oort, Forte Piano. Bart van Oort completing his modern piano degree in 1983 and studied forte-piano with Stanley Hoogland at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1986 he won both first prize and the special "Audience" prize at the Mozart Fortepiano Competition in Bruges, Belgium. He subsequently studied with Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University and received a doctor of musical arts degree in historical performance practice in 1993. He has been a prolific recording artist, as well as recitalist, with roughly 40 recordings to date. His repertoire runs from Haydn, whose complete piano trios he has recorded, to the romantic era, with recordings of Chopin, Field and their lesser-known contemporaries. He recently completed an eight-year project producing the complete keyboard works of Mozart, a collection which includes many pieces hitherto unrecorded. 683-5305. $10 ODU Students, $15 General. Jeanette Winsor will talk about Hildegard de Bingen and Countess of Dia, playing CD's of an example of their songs. She will also talk about Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Marianne von Martinez, Maria Theresa von Paradis, Maria Agata Szymanowska, Clara Wieck Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Cecile Chaminade, Amy March Beach and Dorothy Rudd Moore. She will play a piano piece by each and will tie in what as happened through history on public sentiment, education and career possibilities. This program is free and open to the public and will be held in the Theater of Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus.

Subito Innovations: A Taste of Contemporary Compositions
Students of Old Dominion University music faculty member Dr. Andrey Kasparov will present a concert of works by Allan Blank, Timothy Melbinger, Witold Lutoslawski and Grazyna Bacewicz. Allan Blank's manuscripts are a part of the Contemporary Music Research Collection and Timothy Melbinger's compositions are held in the New Music Performance Collection of the Old Dominion University Libraries' Diehn Composers Room. Camerata Bariloche
No Argentine chamber group has had such a sustained, regular and brilliant existence as the Camerata Bariloche, which can proudly show a luxurious international career enriched by a gratifying artistic success. Created in 1967, its first conductor was Alberto Lysy, who was succeeded by Rubén González and Elías Khayat. Since 1992 the musical director is Fernando Hasaj. The group is composed by almost twenty musicians, selected among the best in Argentina, and its artistic background is made up of no less than 2,500 concerts and some thirty recordings, done in different parts of the world.
