Symphonicity Auditions
Symphonicity, The Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach will be holding auditions for all voice parts in their chorus this summer on Saturday, September 8. Auditions will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach located at Pacific Ave and 36th St. These auditions will be in preparation for their annual choral concert on February 24, 2008 at the new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts at Town Center in Virginia Beach. The works being performed are Poulenc's Gloria and Rutter's Mass of the Children (in collaboration with the Virginia Children's Chorus).

Hampton Roads Men's Chorus Auditions The Hampton Roads Men's Chorus, will be accepting new singers through the end of September. The HRMC was established in 1996 to give voice to the LGBT community of the Greater Hampton Roads region and through its music promotes the inherent worth, equality, dignity and acceptance of all people. Rehearsals are held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Norfolk on Sunday afternoons from 4:00-6:30 p.m. Interested singers may contact the director at iWant2Sing@steppingout.org to schedule an audition prior to rehearsals. The HRMC presents two concert series each season in addition to appearances at various local LGBT events. This upcoming season the HRMC will present the premiere of a commissioned work by Los Angeles composer Scott Henderson at the GALA International Choral Festival in Miami, FL in July of 2008.

Cantata Chorus Vocal Auditions Auditions for all voice parts will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church [500 Court Street in Portsmouth] on Monday, September 24, 2007 beginning at 7 p.m. The audition consists of a voice classification and sight-singing evaluation. Singers are asked to bring a prepared piece of their choice; all other materials will be provided at the time of audition. An accompanist will assist with each audition. The Cantata Chorus rehearses on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Rehearsals begin on October 8th. All auditions must be scheduled in advance. Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia is celebrating over
30 years of serving the Hampton Roads community by teaching and
training over 250 talented musicians each year. Four orchestras
rehearse Monday evenings during the regular school year in Norfolk,
producing four different concert programs of orchestral music for
the communities in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake each season.
Participating students come from all over Hampton Roads including
Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, the Peninsula and
North Carolina. Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia is a non-profit
organization that is funded through membership fees, municipal,
state and foundation grants as well as corporate and individual
contributions.

Vadim Gluzman fuses 19th century technique
with the passion and energy of the 21st century. Lauded by critics
and audiences worldwide, Gluzman became a favorite at The American
Theatre after his stunning performances with his wife, pianist Angela
Yoffe, in 2000 & 2003.Born
in the city of Zhitomir, Ukraine to a family of professional musicians,
Vadim began studying violin at the age of seven. At the age of 16
he was granted five minutes to play for the late Isaac Stern. From
that moment, a friendship was born, and the two went on to work
together in Israel and the United States. In 1994, Mr. Gluzman received
the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. He now plays
the extraordinary 1690 ex-Leopold Auer Stradivarius violin on extended
loan to him through the generosity of the Stradivarian Society of

Duo Erato is accomplished guitarists Risa Carlson and Martha Masters. The Tidewater Classical Guitar Society is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1984 to provide cultural and educational opportunities to those interested in the classical guitar. The Society presents a season of performances by many of the world's best known and most outstanding guitarists and lutenists. Mandolin and balalaika have also been featured. In this powerful piece, a group of actors,
musicians, and dancers will perform the poetry of Spaniard Federico
García Lorca and American Walt Whitman, focusing on selections from
each poet dealing with the two dominant themes of love and war.
Mezzo-soprano Michelle Rice will sing passages from Bellini's Norma
to help reference the musical world in which Whitman lived and his

Soprano Roberta Alexander will perform
an evening of music, including opera arias, lieder, Broadway songs,
anecdotes and information with the central theme of "Femmes Fatale."
Among the most compelling singing actresses of our time, Alexander
enjoys international renown for her riveting, incisive characterizations
and miraculous vocal and dramatic range. She is an uncommonly communicative
recitalist and has offered acclaimed programs at New York's Carnegie
Recital Hall, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Vienna
Musikverein, London's Wigmore Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
An especially ardent and persuasive interpreter of American masterworks,
her latest recordings include Songs My Mother Taught Me and
With You (the latter an anthology of Broadway songs). Her
voluminous discography on the Etcetera, Philips, Sony, Teldec and
BMG reflects her astonishing mastery of varied vocal styles: songs
by Barber, Mozart, Bernstein, Ives, Copland, Strauss, Castelnuovo-Tedesco,
Puccini and Villa-Lobos; Handel's Giulio Cesare, Apollo
e Daphne, and Samson and Theodora; Mozart's Don Giovanni
and Idomeneo and such rarities as Goldschmidt's Der Gewaltige

The Gospel truth about the Negro Spiritual
What is the Gospel truth about the Negro Spiritual? How are spirituals similar to Gospel music and how are the two styles different? Soprano and researcher Randye Jones will address these
questions in a lecture-recital. The
presentation will include musical recordings by performers who have
revolutionized each style over the years. Also Jones will be joined
by pianist William Tinker to demonstrate different approaches to
setting the same spiritual, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless
Child. Jones has gained international recognition for her research
of African American vocalists and composers through her Web site,
Afrocentric Voices in Classical Music, and her research project, The
Art of the Negro Spiritual, has been profiled in publications such as
Billboard.

Bay Youth Orchestras: The Elements - Earth
Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia
will open its 2007/2008 season with The Bay Youth Symphony and Concert
Orchestras featured in this, the first of 4 concerts inspired by
the four classical elements; Earth, Fire, Water and Air. This performance
presents Earth as portrayed in Dances with Wolves by John
Berry, an adaptation of the score from the film of the same name
and Smetana's The Moldau inspired by the Vltava river as
it flows through the historic region between Romania, Moldova and
the Ukraine. Also featured on the program is the Thunder and
Lightening Polka by Strauss, Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg
and the Third Movement from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6. This concert
is Helen Martell's first as Music Director and Symphony Orchestra
director and Todd Parrish's first as Concert Orchestra conductor.
Ms. Martell was selected for the Music Director position after the
departure of Dr. Jean Montès for Loyola University in New Orleans.
She had been the Concert Orchestra director for 6 years.

VWC Concert Series: Lee Jordan Anders Plays Beethoven Lee Jordan Anders, Batten Professor of Music and Artist-in-Residence at Virginia Wesleyan, performs Ludwig Van Beethoven's Sonata in A Major, Opus 2/2; Sonata in C-sharp minor "Moonlight," Opus 27/2, Sonata in E Major, Opus 109. Jordan Anders joined the Virginia Wesleyan music faculty in 1986 after living in Europe for five years, a period devoted to performing extensively as both soloist and chamber musician. During the fall of 2005 she was a resident at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris where she studied the music of Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. Her second CD recording, In A, was released in 2006.

Of Love and War, The In Series
In this powerful piece, a group of actors,
musicians, and dancers will perform the poetry of Spaniard Federico
García Lorca and American Walt Whitman, focusing on selections from
each poet dealing with the two dominant themes of love and war.
Mezzo-soprano Michelle Rice will sing passages from Bellini's Norma
to help reference the musical world in which Whitman lived and his
love of bel canto, as well as selections from Manuel de Falla's
Siete Canciones Populares Españolas to add to the context
of Lorca's works. Ms. Rice tells us "The recitation of this poetry
as a performing art is a beautiful and compelling process to be
a part of, and I'm sure it will be captivating to watch."

Sutasoma: Balinese Wayang Kulit
Master puppeteer Gusti Putu Sudarta, accompanied by a small ensemble of leading Balinese and American gamelan musicians, directs the Sutasoma tale in an evening of traditional Balinese Shadow Theater (wayang kulit). Sutasoma is one of the only extant Buddhist tales in the largely Hindu Balinese culture. A Dalang-shadow master, singer, story teller-manipulates intricately carved leather puppets against a semi-transparent screen and provides voices for each character, entertaining the audience with dances, fight scenes, humor, and philosophical exegesis. This concert is co-sponsored by the Reves Center for International Studies and the Department of Theatre.
