Approximately 50 young musicians from Peninsula cities and counties are members of the PYO and the Sinfonia, its junior string orchestra. The PYO, a full symphonic orchestra, plays Level IV-V pieces. Members of the PYO are mainly from our homeschool community, middle-schools, and high-schools, but some members of the Sinfonia are in elementary grades. The Sinfonia string orchestra plays Level II-IV pieces. The Peninsula Youth Orchestra is committed to encouraging and promoting interest in orchestral music in young persons by providing them with instruction, training and performance opportunities while supporting public and private school music programs and teachers on the Virginia Peninsula. Open Auditions for Bay Youth Junior Strings Orchestra
Auditions for the Bay Youth Junior String Orchestra's 2005-06 season will take place on September 19th and 26th between 5:30-7:00PM in Chesapeake and 5:00-6:30 PM in Norfolk. The Junior String Orchestra is designed for students (grades 3-7) with beginning note-reading skills. Our objective is to train young string players to read a variety of music and develop ensemble listening skills. This orchestra is a training group that would prepare students for the more advanced skills required to play in the String Orchestra, or in the string sections of the Concert or Symphony Orchestras in the future. Please call the Bay Youth manager, Bob Spaeth, at 757-618-1800 to schedule an audition. At the audition, students will be asked to play a D and G major scale (one octave) and will be given a sight-reading excerpt to demonstrate their reading ability. There is a $5 audition fee.

Auditions for the Virginia Chorale Young Singers Project
The Virginia Chorale will hold auditions for the Young Singers Project on October 3, 5 and 12. Scheduled auditions begin at 3:30 pm and will be held at the Virginia Chorale office, 236 E. Plume Street, Norfolk. High school-age singers of all voice categories are encouraged to audition for this select chamber choir. The YSP presents a concert in early February each year, with intensive 2-a-week rehearsals in January under the mentorship of Music Director, Robert Shoup and the Virginia Chorale professional singers. Students also have the opportunity to engage in an optional spring project. From Age to Age, one classic story is as timeless as love itself. Virginia Opera is pleased to present Gounod's Romeo and Juliet, last staged in 1998. Soprano Wei Huang, who wowed audiences earlier this season as Liù in Turandot, will debut in her first leading operatic role here as Juliet. Huang recently received accolades for her role of Mimì in Baz Luhrmann's 2002 Broadway production of La Bohème. Stage and fight director David B. Lefkowich makes his Virginia Opera directorial debut. Lefkowich has recently worked at The Metropolitan Opera on productions including The Magic Flute and Aida, and with Glimmerglass Opera on Le Portrait de Manon and The Consul. John Dixon's New Seasonal Cantata: A World of Carols
Chancel Choir of Providence Presbyterian Church, Valetta Fellenbaum, music director. Accompanied by Carole Stockmeier, flute; Lynn Rechel, clarinet; Charlotte Dettwiler-Carr, violoncello; John Dixon, organ. This is the sixth year that John Dixon, organist at Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, has written a new Christmas cantata as part of the music outreach of the church. In previous years, the cantatas have been based on carols from England, France, America and northern Europe, as well as Piae Cantiones, an acclaimed collection made in Finland in 1592. This year, the horizons are broadened, and the cantata includes carols from many countries, from as far away as Australia. Some are familiar, and some will be new to you. First presentation during morning worship at 11 am. Evening presentation with additional music by the Bells of Providence at 7 pm. Free admission, a free will offering will be received. Christmas at Wesleyan: Poulenc's Gloria
