The Jupiter String Quartet places a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future classical music audiences through outreach work in the school systems and other educational performances. Diehn Series: Kitka, American women's vocal art ensemble
“Kitka’s songs are hauntingly beautiful, simple yet otherworldly.  The rich sound these women produce resonates as if energized by the universe itself, as if it were calling all live beings and still matter into togetherness and unity.” – San Francisco Chronicle “The singing of Kitka was tangy, excellently in tune and verbally communicative.”—Andrew Porter, THE NEW YORKER “Simply amazing harmonies…truly this is the most wonderful singing I have ever heard.” —David Crosby, CROSBY, STILLS, AND NASH Kitka is a women’s vocal ensemble unlike any other. These sophisticated singers blend a contemporary sensibility with specialized Eastern European vocal techniques that have been distilled over centuries. Using only the pure unaccompanied voice, they create a constantly shifting landscape of sound, pulsing with angular rhythms, where dramatic dynamics leap from delicate stillness to shattering resonance, and seamless unisons explode into lush incomprehensible chords.  More than just a concert, an evening with Kitka unites vibrant music, enhanced by a subtly changing stage picture, compelling song introductions, and each singer’s warm rapport with the audience.  This is powerful music by accomplished musicians who offer more than just exquisite execution – these women clearly share a passion for what they do. Kitka: powerful female voices uniquely blended in exquisite dissonance and harmony. (Master class Tuesday, October 26, 12:30 pm, Chandler Hall. Free and open to the public.) BBC Concert Orchestra
There are orchestras that just play Beethoven, and there are ensembles that mix it up with modern music. For the BBC Concert Orchestra, “versatility” and “flexibility” are its bywords, so the standard 56-strong membership can expand or contract according to what’s on the program.  Bring in a saxophone section and it’s an up-front big band, perfect for accompanying top-drawer West End artists. Increase the strings and they’re ready to play Elgar’s Violin Concerto with Nigel Kennedy. They are an orchestra, it’s been said, that is “made up of musicians all of whom enjoy crossing the musical boundaries … with incredibly wide-ranging tastes … [playing] as broad a repertoire as possible in as stylish a fashion as possible." Virginia Opera: Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, is a delicious charade of flirtation amid the many shortcomings of love. A wonderfully perfect opera for the holiday season! The classic comedy will be performed in Italian, with English supertitles, under the stage direction of Eric Einhorn who is making his directorial debut with Virginia Opera. This scintillating little farce is two parts seduction, two parts jealousy and a heaping helping of good-natured cynicism, all resulting in outlandish disguises, trickery, and a playful plot putting love to the test. Audiences will be left to wonder why people tamper with love. Associate Artistic Director & Associate Conductor, Joseph Walsh will conduct.Additional season details are available online at www.vaopera.org.
